Tooth-Colored Fillings

If you’re one of the lucky people who can say, “I’ve never had a cavity,” we congratulate you! However, many of us do everything right and will still develop cavities. In fact, tooth decay is such a common disorder that it’s second only to the common cold!

Clifford S. Litvak, DDS, has devoted his professional life to staying current with all the latest advances to provide the highest quality care available. Now we can incorporate state-of-the-art materials with a common treatment to achieve a beautiful smile without costly cosmetic dental treatments. Tooth-colored fillings (also referred to as composites) are one of these treatments.

Why You Need Fillings

We place a filling when decay caused by bacteria has attacked healthy tooth structure, creating a cavity. Of course, cavities don’t typically stay the same size. The longer these harmful bacteria remain, the more damage they cause.

Without a dental filling, the cavity grows and eats away at your tooth. The decay will continue to spread and eventually cause toothaches and possible infection.

Unfortunately, you may have tooth decay and not even realize it. This is because typically, no sensitivity occurs until the cavity reaches the deeper layer of tooth structure, where it then spreads more rapidly. This is also where it can do the most serious damage.

Knowing this, you can see why preventive treatments like dental exams and cleanings are so important. When decay is treated in its earliest stages, we have the best opportunity to stop the damage and restore your healthy smile. A filling may also be the best treatment for teeth that are cracked or show excessive wear.

Why We Choose Tooth Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored composite filling material can be mixed to closely match the shade of your natural tooth. Since we can make a repair that’s virtually undetectable, tooth-colored fillings are perfect for filling teeth that show when you smile. The esthetic quality of composite fillings also makes them a good choice for repairing certain cosmetic dental problems like chipped or broken teeth.

Composite fillings are good for your teeth, too, because the material is bonded directly to the tooth structure, creating a strong filling that doesn’t require us to remove a lot of your natural tooth. Tooth-colored fillings are also very durable and less likely to create sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.
